The infectious enthusiasm of clients who were deliberately taking larger steps in their journey to live a more sustainable lifestyle resulted in a home that fulfilled many goals.  The home needed to have a certain look and feel to match their tastes and new acreage setting, while providing the satisfaction that this could be done with environmental consciousness. The outcome was a home chosen as the winner of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association provincial Green Home Award, which rewards the combination of providing maximum energy performance with aesthetic quality. Some of the features that were required to meet the performance goals of this Net Zero Ready home aligned with design objectives.  The decorative acid stained concrete floors and masonry fireplace surround that were desired for their visual qualities offered the necessary thermal mass required for passive solar heating, while the thicker, highly insulated walls permitted the wider window ledges to be used as display shelving, matching the country-themed décor of the home.
