Provincial & Municipal Grants Applicable to Residential Solar Panel Installation

Scroll

Solar PV systems are a great way to reduce your electricity bill and help the environment. To help reduce the installation cost of residential solar panel systems for Edmontonians both the City of Edmonton and the Alberta Government offer a variety of grants.

Why Add Solar Panels?

Though electricity only accounts for 16% of the energy Edmontonians use, it produces around 40% of the greenhouse gas emissions we release into the environment every year. Installing solar panels is also a great way to protect yourself from the ups and downs of fluctuating energy prices as well as reduce your carbon footprint.

Depending on how many solar panels you install your new solar system could generate enough electricity to cover 100% of your family’s electricity needs. Alberta Micro-Generation Regulations also allow you to remain connected to the Alberta electric grid, so your home will still have access to electricity even when the sun isn’t shining.

More information about the benefits of adding a solar system to your home can be found in the Alberta Go Solar Guide.

Is My Home a Good Candidate?

Edmonton is one of the sunniest cities in the country, with an average of 2300 hours of sunlight each year, making solar panels a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. You can find out how much sun your home receives on average by consulting the City of Edmonton’s solar map.

Available Rebates

The City of Edmonton offers a $0.15/watt incentive to families who install solar panels on their residential properties through its Change Homes for Climate program. This rebate can also be paired with the $0.90/watt rebate offered by Energy Efficient Alberta, leading to savings that could cover up to 40% of the cost of going solar.

Energy Efficient Alberta will cover either $10,000 or 35% of your eligible system costs, whichever is less.

How to Get the Rebates

Qualifying for the solar energy rebates is a simple and painless process.

To qualify for your rebate you will first have to hire a qualified solar provider that is currently listed on the Solar Energy Society of Alberta’s providers directory. Once you have selected a qualified provider they will be able to answer all your questions including:

  • The economic benefits of using solar to power your home
  • The technical aspects of how your new solar system will work
  • Which rebates are available to you

They will also be able to provide you with the most up-to-date information regarding solar rebates in Edmonton and Alberta. Your solar provider will also take care of all the approvals, permits, and rebate claims for you.

A complete list of the terms and conditions laid out by Energy Efficient Alberta can be found here, and a complete list of the terms and conditions laid out by Change Homes for Climate initiative can be found here.

All homes built by Effect Home Builders are designed to be solar ready, which means that it is easy to add solar panels to your home. Even if your Effect Home has already been built we can easily add a solar system for you and help you navigate the rebate process.

We pride ourselves on staying up to date on all applicable residential solar system grants so that we can help make it easier for you to make your home more environmentally friendly.
