Idylwylde Net Zero

Infused with artistic flair, this net zero energy home produces all the energy needed for the home PLUS powers two electric cars!

The Plan

Clear priorities from the start helped set the stage for this enjoyable project.

The challenge was to create a net zero energy home that produces its own clean solar energy. Extra solar capacity was also needed to fuel two electric cars.

This forever home needed the ability to age in place with full wheelchair accessibility.

Infusing artistic personality was also defined as a top priority.

The Build

Optimizing energy from the sun was key in the design of this net zero energy home which won the 2020 Energy Efficiency Award from Bild Alberta. Close attention was paid to the insulation and air-tightness of the building envelope. South facing windows allow the copper-brown acid stained concrete floors to absorb solar energy to help heat the home.

To accommodate aging in place, multiple plan revisions were required to place house as low as possible. This zero threshold eliminated exterior steps at specified entrances, ideal for wheelchair mobility. The stairs to the basement were also designed for a future stair lift so all areas of the house are easily accessible.

The vaulted ceiling and large windows capture attention and allow abundant natural light into the welcoming space. To embrace the homeowner’s artistic nature, purposeful selection of materials and finishes was critical. An example is the stained glass barn door and sidelights which were designed by a local artist, adding a personalized touch.

For added peace of mind, this Holmes Approved Home underwent a series of home inspections including onsite field reviews by approved Mike Holmes Inspectors. This unbiased, third party review serves as a thorough, transparent record of the quality and value that exists behind the walls.

Solar Energy

52 photovoltaic solar modules were installed on both the house and garage that generate all the electricity needed.

Two high capacity electric car chargers are installed in the garage that charge 6x faster than standard. A huge boost to the convenience of a busy lifestyle.
